CENTS THRU HALVES: BU War Nickel Rolls, 43D and 44D, are targeted at Bid, $140 and $550, respectively. Fresh material, like any other area of the market, finds a home very quickly. A 20 roll deal of Franklins, spread across 1952 to 1961, off the market for 30+ years sold over the wire in a heartbeat.
MERCURY DIMES: Winged Liberty takes flight in two columns, MS63 and MS64, for three issues, 1919, 1921, and 1921D, the latter two issues, of course, are the keys to the series in the grades mentioned apart only from the 16D and the two over-dates. Uncirculated short-sets are available for a bit less than current levels.
WALKING LIBERTY HALVES: A $75K reward is offered to anyone who can locate a 1942S in an MS67 holder. The 1945D rests alone as the Type coin in sight-seen land at $95 Bid. A handful of other common dates have declined and are making their way towards the Type designation as well.
DOLLARS: First year of issue Morgans are eagerly sought in the XF/AU grade range with at least one dealer willing to take up to 200 at $21 per for XF examples of either 78 7TF issues or the 78S and $26 at the AU50 level. High grade Peace Dollars are needed, specifically mentioned 1921, 22, 23, and 25 in PCGS MS67 and 1922S, 23S, 27, 27S, 27D, 35, and 35S in PCGS MS66. They must be blast white, with no haze to get all the money.
PROOF SETS AND MINT SETS: Sellers dominate both charts, and with many of the big Bidders at the ANA, this is perhaps not a surprise. The result is a fair amount of downward pressure. When buyers return home, however, any unfilled inventory needs will undoubtedly be met with Bids. All-in-all nothing unusual this time of year.
COMMEMORATIVES: This week is a flurry of activity, a hodgepodge of advances and retreats with MS63-64 being hit hardest while MS65-66 strengthens. 35S San Diego, 36 Columbia, and 46 Iowa all take a subtle slide from Very Choice down across-the-board. Gold remains robust from Choice through Gem with the $2½ Sesqui also needed in lower grades.
TYPE: Though the troops are in Boston, Bidding support does not languish in the least for Circulated or Mint State Type, especially in the neighborhood from Small Cents through Nickels. Flying Eagle Cents are targeted at or near Bid from XF thru MS65; 3’ Nickels and 3’ Silvers are similarly targeted in MS63 to MS65. Quarters and Halves garner solid support at or near Bid from Liberty Seated through Barber listings, including Standing Liberty Quarters. Proof Type also provides consistent Bid support for most of the material covered, in addition to yielding a couple of advances. Liberty Nickels with Cents in PR64 and Barber Halves in PR63 are higher.
GOLD: Gold Spot and generic Gold Type continue to confound. Spot looks to stabilize around $1,200, though the chart is dominated from top to bottom with downside tweaks. $10 Eagles struck from 1838 thru the 1870s are hot. Coins certified XF40 to AU58 routinely bring prices at public auction well in advance of Bid, sometimes multiples, as collectors have discovered an area where rarity relative to price makes for a bargain. Proof Gold is another area where demand is visibly increasing.
